About Buird Pottery

We’re Graeme and Inga and we make Buird pottery in our workshop in the beautiful Derbyshire Dales. Our name comes from the ancient Scots word for table and is pronounced ‘boord’ - we both grew up in Scotland so the name seemed apt.

Buird is an ancient Scots word for table. It’s pronounced ‘boord’.

All our pots are made in small batches from stoneware clay, which is hard wearing and resilient to chipping. Buird pots are dishwasher proof, although hand washing is advised to prolong their beautiful colours for a lifetime. It’s a lovely thing to hand care for something that is handmade.

Most pieces of Buird pottery are hand thrown on the potter’s wheel and then dipped in glaze. Each pot will have very slight variations which adds to their character. We fire our pots in either an electric or a wood fired kiln.

It takes about 4 weeks to complete each batch. After being thrown, they are left to dry, bisque fired, glazed and then put through their second firing to vitrify the glaze. They’re then checked and carefully packed for the journey to their new home.

We hope you enjoy using them as much as we enjoy making them.
